Automated 3D Spatial Damage Detection in Structural Systems for Finite Element Model Updating

  • An automated computer-vision based method was developed to locate and quantify section loss damage

  • In order to preserve data integrity and resolve localized high-fidelity details, direct 3D point cloud analysis was implemented

  • Utilizing the accurate geometric information of the identified damages to locally update the existing 3D solid model of the structure which later facilitates the finite element analysis

  • Experimental results demonstrate that the developed method is able to accurately and efficiently detect damages with dimensions about 10 mm or larger
